Electrophysiologic Study (EP Study)

An EP study is a test of the hearts electrical system. This test is performed in the catheterization laboratory. You will be given sedation through an intravenous line. A sheath will be placed in your femoral vein (groin) and wires will be placed in the right side of the heart. The wires will pace your heart at certain areas to see if an arrhythmia can be initiated. The cardiologist will obtain the information and once this is complete, the wires will be removed and the sheath will be pulled.

Why you are having this procedure (symptoms/indications):

This procedure is recommended for those who have had an unexplained sudden loss of consciousness or if your cardiologist feels you are at an increased risk of sudden cardiac death. Sometimes patients will have documented non-sustained rhythms such as ventricular tachycardia and the cardiologist will want to see if this is sustained or not.

Prep for the procedure:

Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. Notify the nurses of your allergies and current medications.

What to expect:

Risks:

Bleeding at the site of catheter insertion (femoral vein), perforation of the wall of the heart that could result in tamponade, and cardiac arrest.

Post procedure instructions/limitations:

When to call your cardiologist:

No lifting more than five pounds for three days. No tub baths for five days; it is ok to shower.

Miscellaneous:

If you experience bleeding from the site or develop a fever.
