Cardioversion

This procedure is performed in the catheterization lab with the assistance of anesthesia primarily but sometimes the sedation will be ordered by the cardiologist and administered by the nursing staff. You will be hooked up to a heart monitor and sedated with intravenous medications. An electric shock is delivered. This shock causes the heart to stop momentarily and allows the heart to restart itself with a normal rhythm. You will be monitored in the holding room of the catheterization lab until you are awake and then will be discharged home with a family member/friend. You will not be able to drive after this procedure until the following day.
